Interim Management

This is currently mainly with not for profit and public sector organisations. Led by Peter Maple MBA., CIM, Member of the Institute of Fundraising. Peter Maple has been working in the voluntary sector over the last 12 years with a range of charities including: YMCA, Arthritis Care, Leonard Cheshire and the Brooke Hospital for Animals. Prior successful experience included senior marketing positions in a number of multinational communications companies.

When not-for-profit organisations undergo significant change – the loss of a chief executive or key senior executive, such as director of fundraising and communications -

there can be a very considerable loss of momentum and even direction whilst a suitable replacement candidate is identified and successfully recruited. Delays of six months or more are not unusual when the first loss is unexpected. In that time other key staff may decide to leave thus increasing costs and reducing effectiveness.

To overcome many of the problems of lost momentum, reduced team performance and staff morale it can be extremely cost effective to employ an experienced senior professional to hold the reins during the interim period. Such placements can often be accomplished on a two or three days per week basis so that no additional expenditure, over use of the original salary and overhead, need be incurred. This positive intervention by trustees or existing chief executive can have huge benefits in improved performance and reduced staff turnover caused by unrest at the original change. The interim manager may also be used as a valuable change agent during such times, or for planned change where a permanent member of staff is not justified. Successful projects include work with charities such as: CSOC  USPG  Brooke Hospital and BackCare.

Fundraising

In addition to the one to one mentoring and coaching assignments strategic reviews of marketing, fundraising and communications activities can be undertaken. Such reviews and audits can allow incumbent or incoming directors responsible for such functions the time and space to continue operational duties and avoid overload issues for teams working hard to deliver on existing priorities. This is particularly important for Marketing and Fundraising activities.

Mentoring & Coaching

One to one mentoring can provide vital confidence and feedback to senior managers such as newly appointed chief executives and fundraising or communications directors. In addition however more junior staff who have for example recently assumed wider management responsibilities from a previous functional specialist position. Sessions are completely confidential and provide the incumbent regular and ad hoc opportunities to use the mentor or coach as a sounding board, seeking advice or more usually confirmation that a particular activity or plan is soundly constructed and strategically valuable.

Input can range from as little as a half day per month - which typically would involved a weekly telephone session and a longer face to face meeting each month, to perhaps a half day per week where some additional coaching and even training may be appropriate.

Training

Such reviews may, amongst other things identify specific skill shortages which can be addressed by the provision of customised training, in-house very cost effectively where several team members will benefit from short intensive interventions.

In addition supervision and training can be offered for students and practioners of psychotherapy services.
